Hello everyone,

as your chairperson, I proudly announce our theme for the next meeting:

“What will you do when you grow up?”

As a kid, did you dream about doing the job you are doing right now? What was it? If yes, would you go back in time and congratulate your kid self, or say “what were you thinking”? If not, will you ever go for that dream job? Do you agree with research that suggests that people who do what they love doing are far more successful than those who follow the smell of a freshly minted $100 bill?

Please email me your intros.

Since we are running a little late, please sing up ASAP. If not enough people sign up by Tuesday, meeting will be cancelled by email.

I wil speed up the sign up process with a few suggestions:
Peter, would you mind taking the role of the TT master?
Ying, would you mind evaluating Garrett’s speech?
Robert, would you mind being the TT evaluator?
Carmen, does the role of hark(master) appeal to you?
Any of the new members, there’s no time to break the ice like winter.
Marian, would you mind being the wordmaster?

Cheers,

Sinisa

By campaigning on a platforms calling for change, the fresh-faced, charismatic leaders of reform movements can energise their followers and gain the support of the general public. When you were a kid, did you dream of one day being a firefighter, or a jet pilot, or a… well, fill in your dream job here! And once you grew up (for those of you who have grown up! have your dreams turned to some other career? Or maybe you’re already in your dream job? I know when I was a wee lad, I always wanted to be a veterinarian, and I had lots and lots of different pets - everything from frogs to snakes to mice to cats and dogs. But with time my interest changed from raising animals, to understanding what makes them tick. (I mean in a scientific, not sadistic, way.) My cat seemed to notice the change… and never quite looked at me the same way again.

Following up on Jenny’s email earlier, I’d like to suggest to our Table Topics Master - Robert Edwards - that the table topics questions be in the form of job interview questions. Consider it practise for your next job interview… or if you like, consider it a chance to say something you always wanted to say but never could in a real interview.

For intros, please answer one of the following:
- What is a job you always dreamed of having, and why is that your dream job?
- What is it about your current (or a past) job that you really liked and made a real impression on you?
- What would you tell a friend about your current (or a past) job if they told you they were interested in applying for it?

Inspired by a humorous speech at division B contest, I’d like to share tips and lessons about lying. We will discuss: why we all lie and shall do so, how to improve your lying stills and to lie seamlessly, how to recognize lies and avoid damage from lies, last but not the least, how not to ask for lies…

Liars are normal people, lying can be a state of art, lying to others and ourselves keep our life healthily balanced. So Night Vision liars, please sign up roles that are still missing (Sindy, please clarify your attendance as you signed roles and regret). And please send me brief intro about: how often do you lie? who do you lie to the most? or how good a liar you think you are? Don’t worry, if you can’t tell me the truth, just lie to me.

Speakers please send speech info to me first.

See you Thursday night!

“Rules of Distraction - how to live without TV?”

1) How much power (or how little) do you have when it comes to resisting the urge of channel endless surfing?
2) How many times have you seen the re-runs of your favourite sitcom?

I have lived without television for years, precisely because the answer to the first question is MICROSCOPIC, and the answer to the second one is LOST COUNT AT 15, so I had to go COLD TURKEY. I hope to hear about
1) your coping strategies,
2)your methods to fight TV addictions (if those apply)
3)the show you find the hardest to resist,
4) what is the longest time you have lived without TV - did you really think you lost anything by not having it?
5) any horror stories (the juicier, the better) related to relationship/marital breakup over who gets to control the remote (major relationship breaker, I am told), nearly missed childhood fratricide over conflicting TV schedules (e.g. “Mom, my brother won’t give me back the remote”, or “Mom, my sister wants to watch girlie shows during Superbowl/NBA/NHL finals”) and suchlike.

This week’s meeting theme is LIMITS.

One day, when I had access to the entire collection of the Seinfeld sitcoms, I just sat there and watched one episode after the other. I was aware the day was passing by and nothing was being accomplished. But at the end of each episode, I couldn’t find the strength to JUST STOP and get up. So, on to the next episode… Was there a limit I was exceeding?

Where is the limit? How are we supposed to know if another bowl of ice cream is too much? How friendly is being over-friendly? Why not wait another day before starting on the speech?

For your intro, tell me how you know when the limit is reached!
