So NVTM’ers, I’ve been thinking about resilience and adversity. No, I’m not going to do a Tony Robbins on you and try to take the meeting through a risky but enlightening adversity-overcoming activity such as group skydiving in Tahiti. Although that would be entertaining, NVTM’s budget just won’t cover it. Maybe next year.

Resilience, or the ability to recover from shock or stress, is of interest to me because I demonstrated a profound lack of resilience early in life. After emigrating from Jamaica to Canada in the middle of the biggest snowstorm Toronto had experienced in 40 years, I quickly came to the realization that there were many things I preferred about the life we’d left behind in Jamaica.  (We never had snowstorms there.) I spent the next couple of decades trying to reshape Canada into a more Jamaican experience. I was spectactularly unsuccessful in achieving that goal (the snowstorms kept on coming). What I gained was the knowledge that the only change you can control is your own perspective.

Have you encountered adversity? Demonstrated resilience? Failed miserably at both? :-) It’s all good. One of the major benefits of the human condition is the privilege of failing, learning, and trying again.

I look forward to seeing you on Thursday.
