Regrets, I’ve had a few
But then again, too few to mention.
“My Way” — Paul Anka, for Frank Sinatra

We’ll pass around the easy lie
Of absolutely no regrets.
“A Plea from a Cat Named Virtute” — John Sampson, for The Weakerthans

Okay, Toastmasters, let’s have a little honesty; what do you regret? Here’s your chance to get it all off your chest (and lucky for you, you’re all young enough to redeem yourselves, if you so choose). Or are you going to fall back on what John Sampson terms “the easy lie” — that, like Edith Piaf, you regret nothing. Your life has been what it’s been, it’s all grist for the mill, and – as we used say back in the day – “f**k ‘em if they can’t take a joke”. And if you can’t bear to share with strangers, just do what I do: philosophize, without giving away anything. What can or should one do with feelings of regret? How is regret related to, say, guilt or shame? Sign up for a role or two, and give me your introductions, please.
